Lottah Nursery Tasmania, Australia

Betula pendula Youngii

Syn. B. alba, 'Weeping Silver Birch'

This is a weeping form of one of possibly the most common ornamental tree in Australia. Plants usually seen at nurseries are grafted at the required height and branches allowed to cascade down to the ground.

We provide this cultivar as self rooted small plants which have been headed to accommodate shipping restrictions. The dominant shoot requires staking in the formative years and trained to the required height, then permitted to cascade freely.

We are aware that growers recommend rubbing out the unwanted shoots to direct all the energy into the dominant shoot - our practice is to encourage maximum leaf production each year by leaving all growth intact, and remove the unwanted shoots in Winter. This permits more photosynthesis to establish a vigorous root system.

A stout support is required at least for the first several years.
