Bred by William Kosar in 1963 by crossing M. liliiflora Nigra with M. spengeri Diva.
'Galaxy' develops dark reddish-purple buds that open into 250 mm flowers with lighter red-purple on the exterior of tepals and light rose-purple on the interior.
Parent tree is reported to exceed 9 m in height but we would expect plants to grow to 6 m or so under cultivation.
