Hydrangea paniculata

Syn. 'Panicle Hydrangea'

H. paniculata 'Grandiflora' is well known in gardening circles. In its native habitat in Japan and China the species grows in tree form exceeding 6 m in height. The garden forms, including 'Kyushu', are usually seen as upright shrubs less than 2 m high. They are Summer and Autmn flowering care-free shrubs performing well in partial shade as well as in full sun.

Hydrangea paniculata 'Pee Gee flowers' H. paniculata 'Grandiflora' aka 'PeeGee', sports mainly sterile florets. Flowers emerge green as depicted in the image but mature to white.
Hydrangea paniculata 'Kyushu flowers' 'Kyushu' differs from PeeGee in having masses of yellowish fertile flowers interspersed with large white sterile florets in panicles up to 30 mm across giving an airy look to the cluster. This was raised from seed collected in Japan and was introduced to the trade around 1989. It is a non-suckering shrub flowering over Summer and Autumn; we find the best flowers develop on stems cut back hard in Winter.
Hydrangea paniculata 'Pink Diamond' flowers 'Pink Diamond' bears large open clusters of diminutive fertile flowers interspersed with large white sterile florets that age to pink
