Syringa (Villosae Group) Nike

Raised by Bugala at the Kornickie Arboretum in Poland with cultivar name registered in 1970.

Single dark violet flowers are borne in large drooping panicles in late season; fragrance is considered to be spicy, unlike that of vulgaris.

This is a non-suckering shrub of spreading growth with flower clusters growing almost horizontally and bowing to the ground under the sheer weight. Precocious, as exemplified by the image above of a plant flowering in the second year in the greenhouse. Likely to remain smaller than most of similar hybrids. Not susceptible to blight from local experience.
