Syringa vulgaris Charles Joly

Cultivar was bred by Lemoine in 1896.

'Charles Joly' sports double deep purple florets in midseason and has a pronounced fragrance.

S. vulgaris selections typically grow into large shrubs 3m high with a spread of 2m and usually exhibit a propensity to sucker.

Grafted specimens have been widely available in the nursery trade in Australia for many years.
